about

"And the militantly funky “Leonard,” which shines a light on the hot- button (and still relevant) cause of Leonard Peltier, reflects not only Morninghawk’s awakening to her Native American roots, but the youthful thirst for freedom—creative, philosophical and political—that the band sought to quench on stage at every opportunity." - Bill Murphy - (of Time Out New York)

lyrics

Leonard (for Leonard Peltier)

Families and tribes and clans, they're living
In balance with our relations on the land.
Can we really understand?

Then some centuries ago, came the strangers,
Foreign invaders on their sacred land
Began taking all they can.

Do you know where is this land?
This is our homeland!
Native people killed to steal the land.
What do you think of that plan?

Soldiers told Crazy Horse to talk to soldier chief they said to fear no harm, but he saw prison bars then he knew of their plan.
So he took out his knife, started to fight.
He was stabbed from behind.
Crazy Horse only lived thirty years.
They killed him with their lies.

And then in 1975, government attack Pine Ridge.
Two FBI die, they blame Peltier.
Leonard Peltier is framed.

Told lies to send Leonard to jail.
They gagged him for defending life of Mother Earth.
Leonard Peltier is jailed.

Where is wrong in our love of the earth.
Harmony with all Our Relatives.
Teach respect to children for all life.

What they see destruction of our lives, religion.
What they see destruction of our land, way of life.
No respect. What to think.

Political prisoner on his own land.
Let's free him.
Free the native people from these chains.
Stop the war here going on.

We're not talking about South Africa We're talking about North Dakota.
